What goes on a handyman invoice

Four details make this a handyman invoice rather than a generic one. Each has its number in the sample’s margin, from the top of the page down.

    Who supplied what

    The customer supplied the bookcase and the TV bracket; everything else is listed under materials. Saying who supplied what settles, in advance, who answers for a part that fails.

    Start and end times

    The morning is drawn on the clock, one block per task: the TV from 9:00 to 9:50, the drywall to 10:45, the bookcase to 11:40, the knobs to 12:30, three and a half hours on site. Priced by the task or by the hour, the times show where the morning went.

    Small jobs, one visit

    Four small jobs in one trip, each on its own priced line: the TV, two drywall patches, the bookcase, three knob sets. The customer reads the visit as a list of finished work, and one visit means one invoice.

    Your minimum call fee

    $95 per visit, the first line of the terms. With the minimum printed on every invoice, the customer who calls you about one loose hinge already knows what the trip costs.

Handyman invoice questions

How should a handyman invoice be structured?

Handyman invoices work best task by task: list each task with a description and a price. For hourly work, note the start and end times. Include your minimum service call fee, the materials with receipts, and your total.

Should handymen charge hourly or per task?

Both work. Hourly is easier for multi-task visits, usually with a minimum charge. Per-task pricing works for defined jobs like TV mounting or faucet replacement. Say which method you used on the invoice.

Do handymen need a license to invoice?

Requirements vary by state and city. Some states require a handyman license or general contractor license for work above a certain dollar amount. Check your local regulations and include any license numbers on your invoice.
