At the estimate visit the electrician opened the panel: 200 A, with two blank spaces for a 50 A two-pole breaker. Had it been full, this would have been a panel upgrade, a day of its own.
EV chargers, panel upgrades and rewires are quoted before they are scheduled, and they tie up breakers and copper before anyone pays. This estimate went out at a flat price with a deposit, and the customer paid $420 to approve it, so the materials were bought on the customer’s money, not yours.
The breaker goes onto the bus, 45 ft of cable runs along the garage wall to a 14-50 receptacle, and the circuit is tested with the charger drawing its full current.
