A septic service day, as booked
A septic day is booked the way the calls came in, and around the one appointment that cannot move: the home-sale inspection, set for 9 to 11 with the seller’s agent. Around it go the pump-outs and the trip to the plant, which has to come after the truck is full and before the plant closes. Written down in that order, the truck crosses the area twice before lunch.

Sewage up in the shower drain.
Before the hose goes in, the lid comes off and the tank is read: where the liquid stands against the outlet, and how deep the sludge and the scum are against their pump lines. That reading says whether this tank is full or only not draining, and so whether a pump-out alone will fix the shower. The truck’s other tanks today were read the same way, and each reading says something different.

Unloading at the treatment plant
The truck backs up to the plant’s septage receiving station and unloads, the gallons are logged, and the load is paid for. Then the truck has room again.
Grease trap pumping
A restaurant’s grease interceptor, pumped out and scraped on a set schedule, often every one to three months, before the kitchen opens or after it closes.
Residential septic pumping
The lids are found, and dug out if they are buried. The tank is pumped out through the main lid, the baffles are checked, the effluent filter is hosed off, and the gallons go on the ticket.
Backup and same-day pumping
The same-day call: sewage coming up in the lowest drain in the house. The tank is pumped so the house drains again, and the cause is found before the truck leaves: a full tank, a clogged effluent filter, or a drain field that has stopped taking water.
Drain field service
The distribution box is opened and the field probed for wet or sunken ground, to find why effluent is not soaking away; a line blocked with roots or solids is jetted or dug out.
Commercial septic service
A shop, church or ranch with a bigger tank, sometimes two in a row or a holding tank, pumped on a schedule and often outside the hours the building is used.
Septic inspection
For a home sale: the tank is pumped so the walls, baffles and outlet can be seen, the drain field is walked and probed, and the report is written up for the escrow.
Riser installation
The lids are dug out, risers are sealed onto the tank’s openings and brought up to grade, and new lids go on top, so the next pump-out starts without a shovel.
