Sample day, simulated: one truck and a crew of two, seven booked stops including the transfer station, and one same-day call, on a one-mile street grid at 26 mph.

A junk removal day, as booked

A junk removal day is booked in two-hour arrival windows, the customer’s choice of morning or afternoon, and the crew calls ahead before each one. Inside a window the jobs go in the order they were booked, so the truck can cross town and back for two stops in the same two hours. The transfer station goes in when the box will be full, which on this day is after the morning’s four jobs.

The same day, routed

Business Genie puts the day’s stops in the order that drives least, and keeps the time windows you promised and the length of every job.

In this sample the same 7 jobs take 1 h 05 min of driving instead of 1 h 23 min, with every time window kept instead of 1 missed, and the last one is finished at 4:20 pm instead of 4:30 pm.

How route optimization works in Business Genie

12:40 pm, a tenant moved out

A property manager calls: a tenant moved out and left a couch, a mattress and a dozen bags on the patio. The new tenant gets the keys at 4.

Add a job mid-day and Business Genie re-orders the rest of the truck’s route around it. The truck gets turn-by-turn directions to the next stop.

In this sample the call is fitted in at 2:18 pm and the day is done at 5:05 pm. Taken straight after the job in hand, with the rest driven as booked, the day runs to 5:24 pm.

At the transfer station

Stop 5 · Transfer station · 35 min

12:22 pm–12:57 pm · 7 min drive in

The morning’s load, weighed and tipped.

A junk removal job is sold by volume: the crew quotes it by how much of the truck it will take up, in eighths of the box, from a single item to a full load. So the box is the other clock a junk removal day runs on. When it is full, the next stop is the scale, wherever the route is, and a same-day job can only be taken on if there is room left for it or time for another trip to unload.

Sample day · The truck’s box · About 15 cu yd

12:22 pm · Stop 5 · Box full

The truck pulls onto the scale full: stops 1 to 4, at 1/8 + 1/2 + 1/8 + 1/4. It leaves empty, for the afternoon’s 3 stops.

The truck’s box in the eighths a load is quoted in: above, what is in it; below, the load on the day’s clock as routed, emptied at the transfer station (hatched). The grey dashes are the afternoon as booked before the 12:40 pm call; the bracket is the room it left, 1/4 of the box. Point at the day, a load or the call to see the box at that minute. Simulated.

Route your own junk removal day

Put in your own jobs, how long each takes and the windows you promise, and Business Genie puts them in the order that drives least, and re-orders it when a call comes in.

The first month is free. The team sets up your account and moves your customer data over at no charge, and route optimization is on every plan.

Junk removal jobs, and how long they take

The work a junk removal business books, and how long each job takes once the truck is there. Business Genie keeps the length you set for each job when it routes the day.

  • Single-item pickup

One sofa, one mattress, one treadmill. The crew looks, quotes the single-item or minimum price, carries it out and loads it. Most of the time is the stairs.

  • Transfer station trip

The crew’s own stop, not a customer’s job: the full truck is weighed in, tipped and weighed out, and the load is paid for by the ton. Metal goes to the scrap yard and donations to the thrift store on the way.

  • Appliance and furniture hauling

Fridges, washers, dryers, a sectional in pieces. A fridge or a freezer goes to a recycler that recovers its refrigerant before the metal is scrapped, which is why appliances carry a surcharge.

  • Household junk removal

A spare room, a side yard, what a tenant left behind. Priced by how much of the truck it fills, quoted before anything is lifted; what can be donated is set aside for the donation drop.

  • Construction debris

Cabinets, tile, drywall and lumber from a remodel. Heavy for its size, so a load of it is priced with its weight in mind, and a truck of it reaches its weight limit before its box is full.

  • Hot tub removal

The power is disconnected and the tub drained, then it is cut into sections with a reciprocating saw and carried out through the side gate. The cutting is most of the time.

  • Garage cleanout

A garage emptied down to the floor, often before a move or a sale: sorted into keep, donate and haul as it comes out, loaded from the front of the box to the tailgate, and swept.

  • Commercial cleanout

Desks, chairs, cubicle panels and files from an office or a store that is moving out, usually booked around the building’s hours and its loading dock.

  • Estate cleanout

A whole house, for a family or an estate’s executor: gone through room by room, with what they keep and what is donated set aside before the rest is loaded. Often more than one truckload.

  • Hoarding cleanup

Slow, careful work, room by room, alongside the family and often over more than one day, with the load going to the transfer station as the truck fills.
