A concrete crew’s day is built around the pour. The ready-mix truck is ordered for 6:00, at first light, before the heat can set the concrete faster than the crew can finish it, so the pour goes first. The rest of the day is the other visits a concrete job needs, written down in the order the jobs were sold: pulling yesterday’s forms on one side of town, forming tomorrow’s pour on the other, a repair back across. With a trailer behind the truck, every crossing is slow.

Ready-mix is sold to a clock. ASTM C94, the standard it is bought to, has the truck emptied within 90 minutes of the water going in at the plant, so a crew that is late to its own pour keeps the truck waiting while the concrete in the drum keeps setting. Once it is down, the concrete sets the pace: the finishers wait on it, then have to keep up with it.

The crew is on site at 5:22 am, before first light, and set up when the truck backs in at 6:00 am. Site visit and estimate
The area is measured, the grade and drainage are checked, and the route in for the mixer truck or a pump is walked. The finish is talked through, and the proposal is sent with a deposit on it.
Stripping forms
The day after the pour, the stakes and forms come off, the edges are backfilled and the site is cleaned up. The forms go back on the trailer for the next job.
Trip hazard grinding
A sidewalk slab that has lifted at a joint is ground down to a gentle slope with a concrete grinder, so the edge no longer catches a foot.
Concrete repair
Cracks are cleaned out and filled, broken step corners and spalled spots are patched, and the patch is finished to match the concrete around it.
Cleaning and sealing
The concrete is pressure-washed and left to dry, then sealer is rolled or sprayed on. Stamped and coloured concrete gets it most, and needs it again every few years.
Forming and base prep
The ground is graded, base is spread and compacted, forms are staked to grade with the fall away from the house, and rebar or mesh is set on chairs, ready for the truck.
Pour and finish
A driveway, patio, walk or garage slab, placed straight from the truck’s chute, or pumped where the truck can’t back up to the forms. The more yards in one pour, the more finishers it takes, since all of it has to be finished before it sets.
Stamped and decorative pour
Colour goes in the mix or on the surface, and the texture mats are pressed in at just the right set, a row at a time, before the slab is too hard to take the pattern. The sealer goes on at a later visit.
Tear-out and haul-off
The old driveway, walk or patio is broken up with a breaker and a skid steer, loaded into a dump trailer and hauled to a recycler, leaving the ground ready to grade.
