A carpenter books the day around its long jobs: the two doors first thing, because they take the morning, then the measure at the hour the homeowner can be there. The rest goes where it was written down, the deck repair next because that customer called next, the bench after lunch, the deck quote to end on, and the truck crosses town four times to keep that order. Wherever the day is routed, the doors and the measure hold the morning; the afternoon is what can move.

Estimate for a new deck
The footprint, the height off the ground and the house wall the ledger will bolt to are measured, and wood or composite boards and the railing are talked through. Decks are priced by the square foot.
Repairs and adjustments
A door that sticks is planed and rehung, a cabinet door is realigned, a loose baluster or a split stair tread is replaced. Small, often wanted the same week, and usually billed by the hour with a minimum for the trip.
Measure for cabinets and built-ins
Each opening is measured across at the floor, the middle and the ceiling and checked for plumb and level, the outlets, vents and baseboard are located, and the wood, doors and finish are chosen with the homeowner.
Custom furniture delivery
A piece built in the shop is carried in, leveled, scribed to the wall or the floor where it has to sit tight, and anchored if it is tall.
Door hanging
The old door and jamb come out, a pre-hung door is set plumb and shimmed in the opening, the hardware goes on, and it is cased. One door takes an hour or two; a pair, most of a morning. Priced by the door.
Deck repair
Soft boards are pried up and the joists under them probed for rot, a bad joist is sistered, and new boards, stair treads or a railing post go on to match. Quoted once the joists have been seen, since the rot is what sets the price.
Trim and molding
Baseboard, casing or crown is measured, coped at the inside corners and mitered at the outside ones, nailed off and filled for the painter. Priced by the linear foot.
Cabinet and built-in installation
Boxes built in the shop are set level on the floor, scribed to the walls, fastened into the studs, and the doors, drawers and crown are fitted. A built-in is a day for two carpenters; a kitchen is several. Priced by the linear foot of cabinet, or by the box.
