A lawn care company’s week is a standing list. Every customer is mowed on the same weekday, weekly or every other week, and priced by the visit, and a new customer goes on the end of whichever day has room, so Wednesday’s sixteen properties are in the order they signed up. Split down the middle of that list, each crew crosses town and back with a trailer behind it, and the office park that wants its crew gone by 8:30 is fourth in line.

Split across crews and routed
Business Genie puts the day’s stops in the order that drives least, splits the jobs across your crews, and keeps the time windows you promised and the length of every job. Split by side of town instead, each crew works its own half, and the office park is mowed first, before anyone is at their desk. The list comes round again next Wednesday, and so does the route.
In this sample the same 16 jobs take 48 min of driving instead of 2 h 12 min, with every time window kept instead of 1 missed, and the last one is finished at 12:52 pm instead of 2:20 pm.

A realtor calls: a house on Mariposa St is being photographed for its listing tomorrow morning, and the lawn has not been cut in three weeks. They need it done today.

A lawn’s minutes belong to the lot more than to the grass: fence lines, beds and a narrow side gate take time that the size of the lawn does not show, which is why lawn care is quoted property by property. Once they are set, those minutes are the length the route keeps for the stop.
Two people, one clock: the stop ends when the slower of them is done. Here that is the mower; the trimmer is done 4 minutes before it. The back is 2,420 square feet to the front’s 1,330, but takes 15 minutes to 6: it is behind a 36-inch gate, so it gets the 21-inch walk-behind and 35 passes, where the front takes 8.

Fertilization and weed control
Granular fertilizer goes down across the turf from a spreader, weeds in the lawn and the cracks are spot-sprayed, and a small flag is left in the grass so nobody walks on it while it dries.
Seasonal snow removal
In winter, where it snows, the same crews and the same customer list: driveways plowed or blown, walks shovelled and salted.
Residential mowing
Mow, trim, edge and blow. One person mows the open grass while the other trims the fence lines and beds and edges the walk and the drive; both blow the clippings off every hard surface before the trailer is loaded.
Aeration and overseeding
The sprinkler heads are flagged first so the tines miss them, then a core aerator pulls plugs across the whole lawn, seed goes down behind it, and the plugs are left to break down.
Commercial grounds maintenance
An office park, a church or an HOA’s common areas: the big turf goes to the wide mower, then trimming around every sign, curb and tree ring, the lot edges and the walks blown clean. Often done before the tenants arrive.
Spring and fall cleanups
Leaves and debris out of the beds and off the turf, shrubs and ornamental grasses cut back, the first or last mow of the season, and the trailer loaded with what comes out.
